ROTARY SHARES 2007-08

Rotary District 5810 Shiped 75 tons of Books To Southern Africa

The 2007/08 Rotary year is proving very successful for District 5810.
Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill and Plano Sunrise Club’s have collected and shipped 75 tons of books to Southern Africa
Early in the year, the Grand Prairie Club rescued 25 pallets of text books from the shredder. The Grand Prairie School District had replaced the text books with current editions and had consigned the books to be disposed by the best means possible. Members of the Grand Prairie Club decided that the best means was to box the books up and send them to students in South Africa.

CEDAR HILL BOOKLEGGERS

Later in the year, the Cedar Hill Club followed suit and collected 25 tons of math and science text books.

PLANO SUNRISE BOOKLEGGERS

Each year the Plano Library System holds a book sale. All books left over after the sale had previously been sent to the shredder. What a waste! This year was different. Plano Sunrise Rotary Club loaded up 28 pallets of books and moved them to a warehouse. At the warehouse the books were sorted and re-packed in Rotary District boxes and shipped ultimately to be distributed in Southern Africa.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA District 9300

The Bedfordview Club in Johannesburg is the cog that runs the Books for the World project in South Africa. The Club stores the books in their warehouse and co-ordinates the distribution of the books (a third of a million to date this year) throughout Southern Africa. These dedicated Rotarians have been able to do something that governments have not been able to do, place USA produced literacy materials in the hands of Zimbabweans. Countries covered by their distribution network are Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. They even put the shipping containers to use as libraries or school rooms. ZIMBABWE District 9210

The Books for the World project in Zimbabwe is progressing very well. With the chartering of the Chitungwiza club a satellite distribution has been set up in Harare. This distribution hub will be able to distribute books to Northern Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi
