Happy Valentine’s Day, dear 5810... and Happy Birthday!
It’s already February, but what a great year you are having! were proud to declare Howard Templin as our District Governor Nominee Designate. He will serve the district in 2022-23 as Governor, and is currently serving as an Assistant Governor. We look forward to working with Howard as he begins his training journey!
Put on your “Glad Rags” and grab your Sheba or your Sheik and join us for the “Glitziest” party of the year – District 5810’s Roaring 20’s Casino Gala. A “Bee’s Knee’s" kind of a night, all designed to raise money to donate to Polio Plus.
As previously announced, a selection committee was convened and selected Howard Templin of the Rotary Club of Dallas as the District Governor Nominee Designate. A protest was filed locally based on a perceived violation of MOP enforcement. An investigation was made, and while the MOP as written should be considered for new amendments at the Springtime Business meeting, the District followed the procedures in place at the time. No formal protest was filed according to Rotary International procedure, and it was decided and shared with Rotary International that the selection shall stand.
Congratulations to Howard Templin who will serve our District in 2022-23. See his Rotary bio.
“Rotary is not just a club that you join, it is an invitation to endless opportunities. We believe that our acts of service, big and small, create opportunities for people who need our help. Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere,” said President-Elect Holger Knaack. Therefore, the theme for year 2020-21 is -- Rotary Opens Opportunities.”

Rowlett Rotary provided 64 sleeping bags to the Austin Street Shelter in downtown Dallas. The snow had just started snowing when we pulled up. We also voted to add a service project that we learned about on delivery day: to provide much needed women’s and men’s underwear to the shelter by the end of January.
With a great turn out of Rotarians in attendance, we leaped into Camp RYLA 2020 (our 30th camp!) at our RYLA Kickoff held January 18th. Each club's RYLA Chairperson is now equipped to recruit, interview, and select the best-fitting RYLA scholarship recipient in the local junior class. Look to your club's chairperson to see how you can get involved--this may be the most fun you have all year. More information also at www.RYLA5810.org
Over forty-one years ago a Park Cities Rotarian had a great idea! Rather than have their usual Friday lunch, they would eat chili and donate the cost of their usual lunch to the Salvation Army! So, a tradition began. This past December, Park Cities Rotary members, family and guests gathered at the Salvation Army to eat chili. For the forty-first year RCPC member Bob Grossman, Chili Master Extraordinaire, worked overnight to cook gallons of chili. Using donated venison, fifty pounds of onions and a proportional amount of garlic, he cooked enough to be enjoyed by at least two hundred people.
