Bonham Rotary with the assistance of Alicia Caylor Lewis, a teacher at the I. W. Evans Elementary School, they have for the past 5 years helped teach their 6th graders about water conservation and why it is so important.
First, students are asked to read the short story "A Long Walk to Water", a book based on the true story of Salva Dut, a young boy from Sudanese and his struggle to survive during the Second Sudanese Civil War. After reading the short story, the 6th graders head over to one of the local parks where members of the Bonham Rotary club speak to them about what can be done to use less water during their day to day lives and what happens to the water after they are done using it. Helping them understand what can and cannot go down a drain is also an important lesson.

Bonham Rotarians also teach them about the trials that children in 3rd world countries face each day in regards to something as simple as trying to have access to a fresh supply of clean water. To help illustrate this, the kids walk around the park carrying around a gallon jug of water with them while listening to the Rotarians.

This past year they had 131 kids come visit them, and it was a lot of fun! It's a neat little event that teaches kids an important lesson about conservation.
