Facing a year of extreme challenges, the Rockwall Rotary Club gets creative to raise money for student scholarships—and successfully hosts a modified version of their premier annual event.
Events this year have changed life in so many ways, including the way the Rockwall Rotary Club is raising funds to provide college scholarships for local high school seniors. For the past 34 years the club’s signature event, the Hot Rocks Bike Ride, has been the premier fundraising vehicle. Hundreds of bike riders travel from across Texas to participate in the 54 mile extravaganza in the August heat.

However, as COVID-19 took its toll, the annual event had to be cancelled. Then a new idea grew—the traditional Hot Rocks as we know it transformed into a stationary bike race, honoring the life of a recently passed long-time Rockwall Rotarian and Bike Ride Chairperson.

Sponsors and the community turned out in full support of the evolved Hot Rocks Bike Ride Honoring Scott Self. On Saturday, October 17, crowds gathered at The Harbor in Rockwall for a friendly competition. With beautiful Lake Ray Hubbard as a backdrop, serious riders competed to see who raced the fastest or farthest. Others took their time in a fun ride, and competed for team spirit. Plenty of Rotarians were on hand, registering riders, cleaning bikes, delivering waters and helping out wherever needed. In true Rotary fashion, giving back to the community has never been so much fun!
